How To Trace Your Family Ancestry
By Nathan James

With the dawn of the Internet age more and more people are using this powerful tool to trace their ancestry. For many families, especially those that have immigrated to North America, losing touch with their family roots is quite common. Finding the names and details of relatives when you can only trace back as far as your great grandparents is very difficult. Luckily there are many websites that can assist your search and help find your roots.

You may think that tracing your family’s ancestry is going to cost you an arm and a leg. In pervious years the only way to find your ancestors was to hire an expensive professional company, and results were certainly not guaranteed. However, thanks to many technological advances in database systems, finding your family history is as simple as a couple of clicks.

Information to Help your Search

Before you begin your search, you’ll want to get as much information together as possible. Start by tracing your family tree as far back as possible. Using family tree software makes this process simple as there are often tens, if not hundreds of branches. When you’ve hit the end of your tree, now is the time to find a website that allows you enter what information you have to further your search.

The more info you have the better, but just about anything will do. For instance, you should have first name, middle name, last name, year they were born, country they were born in, year they died, country they died in. Different websites will offer you different options, but this is typically standard. Most website will search through a variety of databases and give your search results that are similar to or match your search criteria.

Free websites will typically just give you search results such as what databases your ancestor’s name appears in. What you do with this information is up to you. You will probably need to do more research to find the next branch in your family tree. However, many of the websites that charge a fee will do this legwork for you. It is important to read specifically what services are offered before you sign up with any ancestry website.
